What This Test Measures: Switch Contact Retention

When you hold a mouse button down, the microswitch inside must maintain continuous electrical contact for the entire duration of the hold. This test measures whether your switch reliably sustains that contact or drops it intermittently — producing an accidental mouse-up event while you are still physically pressing the button. This is a different failure mode than double-clicking. A double-click occurs on the initial press — the contacts bounce together before settling. A mid-hold drop occurs when the switch contacts, already closed, briefly separate under sustained pressure. This typically indicates a fatigued spring that can no longer maintain constant contact force.

How to Read Your Hold Test Result

  • 0 drops in 10 seconds: Healthy switch contact retention. No sustained-hold failure.
  • 1–2 drops in 10 seconds: Early-stage fatigue. The switch is beginning to lose consistent contact force. Expect worsening.
  • 3+ drops in 10 seconds: Significant contact instability. Affects file dragging, window dragging, in-game drag-shooting, and any hold-based input.

What Causes Mid-Hold Click Drops

  1. Switch spring fatigue: The return spring inside the microswitch weakens after millions of actuations. It can no longer maintain constant downward pressure on the contact arm during a hold, allowing brief separations.
  2. Cable drag interference: Stiff mouse cables pulling against the body can cause the button to shift slightly during movement, momentarily changing the contact geometry. Paracord cables or wireless mice eliminate this entirely.
  3. Loose button shell: If the outer mouse shell that presses the switch pivot point has wear or play, the contact may become inconsistent during lateral mouse movement. Check if the button shell wiggles.
  4. Contact oxidation at sustained-pressure point: Oxidation on a specific region of the contact strip — the region depressed during holds — creates resistance that can cause intermittent contact at that specific position.

How to Fix Hold Drop Issues

  • IPA cleaning: Drop isopropyl alcohol into the switch gap while holding the button pressed — this reaches the specific contact point used during holds and dissolves localized oxidation.
  • Switch replacement: For persistent dropping, replace the microswitch. Kailh GM 8.0 and Omron D2F-01 are more durable options with higher spring tension.
  • Wireless conversion or paracord cable: If cable drag is contributing, removing cable tension resolves that specific cause without hardware modification.
  • Compare with double-click test: Run the Double Click Test — if you have both dropping AND double-clicking, the switch spring and contacts are both compromised. Replacement is the only complete fix.
