Double Click Test
Test if your mouse button is registering unintentional double clicks. Click slowly and deliberately inside the test area — if a single press registers two events within 50ms, it is flagged live as mechanical switch chatter.

A single press registering an interval under 30ms is nearly always mechanical — no human can click twice in 30ms intentionally. Intervals between 30–50ms may be fast clicking or early-stage chatter.

What This Test Measures: Switch Contact Bounce
The Double Click Test isolates a specific failure mode of your mouse's primary microswitch: contact bounce, also called switch chatter. When you press a mouse button, the metallic contacts inside the switch come together and separate. In a healthy switch, this happens cleanly in a single event. To your computer, each electrical contact event looks identical to a deliberate click. So one physical press becomes two, three, or more registered input events — all within 10–50 milliseconds. This is why files open when you single-click them, or why games fire double-shots when you intend one. This test measures that inter-event interval live, in your browser, using high-resolution timestamps from the browser's Pointer Events API.

How to Read Your Result
The key metric is the inter-click interval in milliseconds — the time between the most recent two click events. Here's what each range indicates:
- Above 80ms: Healthy. This is the normal range for deliberate single clicks. No switch issue.
- 50–80ms: Gray zone. Could be fast clicking technique, or could be early-stage chatter. Test again with slow, firm, separate clicks to confirm.
- 30–50ms: Likely chatter. No human intentionally clicks twice in under 50ms while trying to single-click. Check your debounce settings.
- Below 30ms: Confirmed chatter. The switch is generating spurious secondary contacts. The switch needs cleaning or replacement.
What Causes Switch Chatter
Switch double-clicking is caused by physical degradation of the switch internals:
- Contact oxidation: The gold or silver plating on switch contacts wears away after 5–20 million actuations (depending on switch rating). Bare metal oxidizes, creating rough contact surfaces that bounce before settling.
- Spring fatigue: The return spring weakens over time, reducing the force pushing contacts apart on release. This makes the contacts hover near each other, triggering marginal contact events.
- Dust and debris: Particles inside the switch body interrupt clean contact closure. Compressed air cleaning sometimes temporarily resolves chatter caused by debris.
- Incorrect debounce firmware: Some mice ship with debounce windows that are too short for the switch quality used. If your mouse double-clicks out of the box, this is likely a firmware issue, not physical wear.
How to Fix Double-Clicking
- Increase debounce time in software: Many gaming mice (Logitech G Hub, Razer Synapse, etc.) allow you to adjust the debounce/double-click speed. Setting it higher (e.g., 12–20ms) suppresses chatter in firmware before it reaches the OS.
- Adjust Windows double-click speed: In Control Panel -> Mouse -> Buttons, slow down the double-click speed. This doesn't fix the hardware but reduces the symptoms at the OS level.
- Clean the switch: Drip a tiny amount of isopropyl alcohol (90%+) into the switch gap with a syringe. Let it dry fully. This dissolves oxidation and removes debris. Works in ~40% of cases.
- Replace the switch: Kailh GM 4.0, Huano Blue, and Omron D2FC-F-7N are common replacement microswitches. Soldering skill required. Optical switches (like Razer's) are immune to contact bounce entirely.

Mechanical switches degrade over time as metallic contacts oxidize or lose spring tension, causing contact bounce. A single press generates multiple electrical contacts. The fix is either increasing firmware debounce time or physically replacing the switch.
