What This Test Measures: Alternating-Finger Actuation Rate
Butterfly clicking is a technique where two fingers — typically index and middle — alternately strike the same mouse button in rapid succession. Because each finger completes a full press-release cycle independently, the button registers a click for each finger strike rather than each complete two-finger cycle. This test measures several specific things: total CPS (clicks per second across both fingers), alternation consistency (are you truly alternating, or is one finger dominating?), and accidental double-register events (where the switch's debounce window captures both fingers as one click cluster — a common failure mode at high butterfly speeds).
All click events are captured live from your mouse hardware via the browser's Pointer Events API — the same events your OS and game engines receive. How to Read Your Butterfly Click Result

- Double-register events detected: Your two fingers are striking too close together — within your mouse's debounce window — causing the switch to register one input for both fingers. Slow down and focus on separation first.
What Causes Butterfly Click Issues
- Insufficient finger separation: If both fingers press and release too close together in time (within the switch debounce window of 4–12ms), the second press occurs before the switch has fully reset — either causing a missed click or a double-register.
- Debounce firmware limit: High-debounce mice (10–12ms debounce) physically cannot register butterfly clicks above a certain rate because the switch's internal timer prevents rapid re-registration. Mice with 1–4ms debounce settings support higher butterfly speeds.
- Switch wear from butterfly clicking: Butterfly clicking applies more total physical force to the switch mechanism than single-finger clicking. Switches used for butterfly clicking typically develop chatter (double-clicking) significantly faster than switches used normally.
- Grip and hand position: Butterfly clicking requires a specific wrist and finger positioning. Palm and claw grips can both support butterfly, but the angle of finger strike needs to be perpendicular to the button surface for clean individual actuations.
